Gaining Ground: How to Build a Simple, Actionable Budget
At Summit Path Coaching, we know that lasting change isn’t just about information; it’s about action, and action comes from clarity, confidence, and understanding what drives you. Managing your money shouldn't feel chaotic. Whether you are an individual working toward personal financial stability or a small business owner, building and maintaining a realistic budget is foundational to your success.
A structured approach to budgeting aligns perfectly with the first phases of our ASCEND Coaching Model:
A — Awareness: You must identify your current financial reality and establish a starting point with honesty and without judgment.
S — Strategy: Once you see the numbers, you can define clear, achievable goals and build a personalized financial roadmap.
The Baseline Budgeting Method
You don't need complicated software to gain control of your finances. A simple, disciplined approach is often the most effective way to begin deconstructing harmful financial habits and cultivating sustainable wealth-building behaviors. Here is how to set up an actionable budget:
List Your Categories (The Left Column): Start by listing all of your expected income sources in the left column. Directly beneath that, list all of your planned expenses in that same left column. This establishes a comprehensive, top-to-bottom view of your financial starting point.
Estimate Your Plan: Next to each category, write down the dollar amount you plan to earn or spend for the upcoming month.
Track Your Actuals (Leave Room): The most critical step is Execution—putting the plan into action with structure and accountability. Leave dedicated room to the right of your planned numbers to track your actual income and expenses as they happen throughout the month.
Why Tracking Actuals Matters
Tracking your actual numbers against your planned numbers is where real Clarity happens. It breaks complex financial topics into simple, clear guidance and helps you understand the "why" behind each decision. When you monitor your progress, you can easily adapt to life changes and troubleshoot obstacles—a phase we call Navigation.
Over time, this disciplined tracking builds habits that strengthen your financial foundation for years to come, leading to true Development. We are real people who care about your progress, your peace of mind, and your long-term success, but ultimately, you take the steps, you make the progress, and you earn every win.
